Chemical compounds such as formaldehyde, which are released from building materials and adhesives are said to be responsible for the so-called “sick-house syndrome.” Japan’s Building Standard Law requires the use of materials that emit less formaldehyde (Highest grade: F☆☆☆☆ ). Misawa Homes has switched to materials graded F☆☆☆☆ not only for the finish materials for floors, walls, ceilings, doors, stairs, and other items as required, but also for items not subject to the law in all houses we build.
Misawa Homes’ highly efficient ventilation systems help deter dust particles, mold, and ticks, and discharge toxic substances such as formaldehyde to the outside while taking in fresh air. Because the system has a heat exchange efficiency of about 70%, the decrease in inside air temperature resulting from ventilation is kept to a certain level. A germ-elimination unit can be installed in outlets to living areas. It is effective against germs that cannot be eliminated by air purification by means of filter filtration.

The traditional method of controlling termites is to apply a liquid pesticide to the soil. The chemical, however, may penetrate into the structure and do harm to the occupants.
We developed an anti-termite system in which a sheet impregnated with anti-termite liquid is laid between the foundation and the bottom of floor panels of a house. The system is not meant to kill but rather repel termites. The evaporation of pesticide is kept to a minimum because the sheet is covered with resin and the amount of chemical contained in the sheet is extremely small as compared with the method in which a pesticide is applied to the soil. The traditional method generally has a guarantee period of 5 years, but we provide a 10-year guarantee for our anti-termite system. Our system is safer and its maintenance costs are small. Furthermore, if the system is renovated appropriately, its guarantee period can be extended for another 10 years. The pollution-free anti-termite system is standard with all of our homes.
